Five Different Door Styles for the Home

Doors can be a tough item to shop for because there are so many styles to choose from. There are completely different combinations of wood, metal and other materials that go into building a door. Knowing the kind of style you prefer going into the sale will help you find what you are looking for.

Single and Double Doors

Single doors open from left to right typically. It’s best to have a double bore for the latch and a bolt lock. Double doors use the same principles as a single door, and they are typically used in the patio, or as French doors.

French Doors

French doors are a type of double door with some very specific features. French doors typically have glass in the center, and there is usually one door that opens while the other remains stationary. Standard double doors are able to open both doors.

Patio Doors

Patio doors are also very similar to French doors. They have the double door setup, and one door opens while the other is stationary. However, patio doors also use a center mulling that helps prevent break-ins. It’s a popular addition with one downside: it’s impossible to open a center mulled door to move patio furniture in and out of the home.

Center Hinge Doors

A center hinge door has all the look of a French door, but it’s able to open either door from the left or right side. It’s great for homes that have the wall space for a French door, but want access to both sides of the door.

Sliding Doors

Sliding doors typically lead to the outdoors, and they are great for homes that don’t have a lot of room for a standard swinging door. Sliding doors also offer a beautiful scenic view of the interior or exterior of the home.
