Choosing the Right Foam for Your Outdoor Seats

Written by The Foam Factory

Outdoor patio furniture is meant to be comfortable and provide you with a place to relax and enjoy your front or back yard. However, once the cushions on your furniture start to wear out it can be difficult to feel comfortable. There’s a good chance that the foam inside your patio furniture cushions will start to give out long before the actual furniture needs to be replaced. This means that your best bet is to purchase an outdoor foam replacement to restore the comfort of your chairs and benches.

It’s important to purchase the right replacement foam for your outdoor patio furniture. Making the wrong choice can lead to seats that aren’t as comfortable as they once were. Even worse, you might choose foam that isn’t suited for outdoor furniture that will be exposed to elements such as rain or heat. This could mean that your foam won’t work at all and you’ll need to start all over again.

So how can you make sure that you are getting the right foam for your outdoor patio furniture? Here are a few things to consider:

Not all foams are actually foam. Some types of cushion filling such as compressed polyester and polyester fiberfill are not actually foam. Instead, they are dense amounts of polyester that are used as batting and in some cases provide an effective foam alternative that is very affordable. However, the nature of the material and their construction means that it is not a suitable choice for outdoor furniture.

Open Cell foams are the best for outdoor furniture. An Open Cell foam is constructed with additional space inside of the material. These large pores allow extra air to flow through the material, which means that it will dry faster than other foams with smaller cells. This means that an Open Cell foam such as Dry Fast foam is ideal for outdoor furniture where the cushions may get wet.

Protect your foam cushions with silk film. Even though materials such as Dry Fast foam are perfect for outdoor furniture uses, you’ll want to make sure that you have extra protection to keep the foam from getting damaged. One way to do this is to wrap the foam inside of the cushion with a layer of silk film. This plastic-like material is soft and noiseless and will help to keep moisture from getting to your cushions. You can even use it to help vacuum air out of the cushions temporarily to make them easier to get into the seat coverings.
