Tips for the First Mow of the Season
The first mow of the season is a little different from the rest. You’ve waited all winter for your lawn to begin growing and turn a lush green color so, you want to make sure you get off on the right foot. Now is not the time to make mistakes that can turn your grass yellow before it has a chance to be healthy.
One of the biggest mistakes that many homeowners make is cutting the grass too short. The best advice is to never cut off more than one-third of the grass in any one mowing. This way, you’re leaving enough of the grass for it to continue growing and be healthy. If you cut it too short, the sun can burn the roots and the grass will turn brown or yellow and eventually die out.
If for some reason the grass is extra long, cut it the first time on the highest setting on your lawn mower and then go over it again in a few days following the one-third cut rule. Before you begin, check your lawn mower blades to make sure they are sharp and ready to go. Dull blades can do more harm than good.
Before you mow, take a little time to make sure the ground is not too soft especially if you’ve had a lot of rain recently. Mowing when the ground is soft can leave deep ruts that damage your lawn and hinder the growth of new grass.
