Keeping your yard looking great through the spring and summer can be a lot of work. However, if you prepare your yard tools in advance and get them ready, then it will be much easier to keep your lawn in order and looking great. Even yard tools need regular maintenance in order to work properly and last longer.

How many times have you pulled out a tool at the last minute only to discover that it was damaged in some way and couldn’t be used? This meant that you had to fix it or replace it before you could continue with your yard work, costing you valuable time. This is very annoying but it can be avoided by being prepared.

Prepare yard tools with these tips:

  • Pruning shears and loppers need to be cleaned with an old rag and solvent, then sharpen the blades and apply a thin layer of oil to keep them lubricated.
  • Pull out the rakes, shovels and similar tools and check them for rust and other damage. Sharpen the edges of the shovels and replace anything that is old, worn or broken.
  • Pull out the lawn mower and check to make sure underneath the deck is clean and free of debris. Then check to make sure the blades are sharp and balanced. It’s also a good idea to replace the old oil with new and change the air filter and spark plug.
  • Check the tires on the wheelbarrow or trailer to make sure they’re pumped up and ready to use. Look for rust damage and place a thin layer of oil on the wheel bearing to keep them rolling smoothly.
  • Check your garden hoses for cracks and leaks. If any occur, replace the nozzle or the entire hose if needed. A water leak will use up lots of resources and can cost you in high energy bills.
