When spring is in the air many people begin thinking about starting that new garden. Planting a new garden is easy once you know the proper steps to follow. It does take planning and a lot of work to keep your garden healthy but the benefits is well worth the effort.
Below are some basic tips that can help you get started so you can enjoy the benefits that having your own garden can bring.
- Decide where you want to put the garden. Base your location on the items that you intend to plant. Some plants need a certain amount of sunlight in order to grow and thrive. The morning sun is usually preferred over evening sun because it’s not as hot.
- Check the soil’s pH level and its texture to determine if it’s an ideal spot for planting or to determine what needs to be added to make it suitable.
- Till the area and get it ready for planting.
- Now it’s time to determine what you want to plant. There are many options such as tomatoes, green beans, potatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers, bell peppers, cabbage, okra and peppers to name a few. Keep in mind that planting corn does require a lot of room.
- Keep the labels that come with your plants in case you run into a problem later you can refer back to them.
- Make sure you have all of your gardening tools available.
- If planting a flower garden it’s a good idea to check and see which plants flourish the best in your general area.
- The best time to put your plants in the ground is when it’s overcast. Don’t plant them too deep or the stem can rot. If they’re not deep enough, the roots can dry out.
- Water your plants as soon as you put them in the ground. If you’re going through a dry spell you’ll need to water the garden. It should get at least an inch of water each week.
Before you set out to plant your garden make sure you have the proper tools to work with. This is very important. It’s hard to maintain a garden and keep your plants healthy if you don’t have the right tools to use.
