How to Get Your Yard Ready for Summer
With the arrival of spring comes many outdoor activities but you must get your yard ready for summer to get the most out of them. After cleaning up your lawn and getting rid of the debris, it’s time for the first mow of the season. After that, your lawn can use a good raking to remove the leaves, trash and small debris found throughout your yard.
Raking also helps homeowners control thatch and gives you a chance to inspect your lawn to look for any areas that may need special attention. If your lawn has a thick layer of thatch or if soil compaction is a problem, then you may need to aerate your lawn to loosen up the soil so the roots of the grass can breathe and get better air flow.
Check to see if your lawn has any bare patches where overseeding is needed and add a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer to give the grass a boost. If you’re not sure which type of fertilizer your soil needs, have it tested. Using the wrong fertilizer can do more harm than good. Before long, you’ll have that lush green lawn you’ve always dreamed of.

There is nothing more beautiful than a healthy, well-kept lawn. When your lawn looks good, you feel great. It makes your home look more presentable, raises property value and helps to reduce the risks of snakes and other unwanted animals from making a home too close to yours. You can take a lot of pride in keeping your lawn green and beautiful and with the tips listed below it’s not as hard as you might think.
Tips for a healthy lawn:
- Monitor the amount of water your lawn receives. If it rains for long periods of time, you need a drainage system so the water will run off and not puddle up in the yard. If it’s a dry spell, you need water your lawn to keep it from drying out.
- Use grass seed to fill in those bare spots. If the grass looks too thin everywhere, you can spread it all over the lawn but don’t use too much. Spread it thin and if you need more later on, you can repeat the process.
- For large bare spots, you need to put down the grass seed and then cover this lightly with straw. This will prevent the sun from scorching the seeds and prevent birds from eating them.
- Nothing can destroy a lawn quicker than weeds so, get rid of them before they have a chance to do damage. Spread weed killers across the lawn as early in the season as possible.
- Aeration is a method that pulls out small pieces of grass so air can reach the roots and improve the condition of your lawn. It’s the best way to fertilize your lawn but it can be expensive.
- Keep debris off of your lawn and mow the grass regularly. If anything sits on the grass for a long period of time, it will deprive it of the nutrients needed to stay healthy and the grass will begin to die.
- Don’t cut your grass too short or the sun will scorch it and cause it to turn a brown color.
- Don’t neglect your lawn when autumn rolls around and the leaves begin to fall. Raking the leaves up will keep your grass healthy so it will have a great start when spring returns.
If you’re having a difficult time keeping your lawn looking great, you need to check the soil. The area in which you live has a huge factor in how well the grass, shrubs, flowers and so forth grows. You may need to treat your lawn with fertilizer in order for it to have the nutrients needed for the grass and plants to be healthy. Using lime can raise the pH balance. This will reduce the acidic levels and increase the amount of alkaline making the soil more suitable for grass to grow. With commitment and a little hard work, anyone can have a green and beautiful lawn.
