One of the most satisfying things about owning a home is having a beautiful lawn to show off when spring rolls around but unsightly weeds can ruin all of your hard work. In fact, one of the biggest problems home owners face is weeds taking over their lawns. Once the weeds begin invading, it takes a lot of work to get rid of them but following a few simple tips can help minimize the growth of these weeds and prevent or at least reduce the problem.
Many home owners assume that the growth of weeds stop in the winter. Therefore, you only need to worry about this problem in the spring and summer but that is not the case. There are certain types of weeds that thrive in the winter and these actually begin their life cycle in the fall. Some of these are the chickweed, henbit and annual bluegrass weeds.
These weeds not only take away from the beauty of your lawn but they also begin dying out in the spring. This will leave bare areas in your lawn where the spring and summer weeds can take over. The first thing you need to do is to find out exactly what type of weeds you have so, you’ll know how to go about getting rid of them.
Once you know the type of weeds that are invading your grass in the winter, you can determine which approach would be the most effective to eliminate them. One method is to pull small patches of weeds out by the roots when they haven’t had time to take a good hold. For those that are deep rooted you can use weeding tools to remove them by the roots.
If the weeds have already spread to a large area, you’re going to need to use herbicides or some other type of weed killing product to help you get things back under control. Always read the directions and follow them completely. Weed killing products can be harmful if not used properly.
Once you have cleared an area of winter weeds, reseed that area as soon as possible to prevent them from growing back or to prevent some other type of weed from taking over. These tips for eliminating winter weeds can help ensure you have a beautiful lawn when spring and summer rolls around.

There is nothing more beautiful than a healthy, well-kept lawn. When your lawn looks good, you feel great. It makes your home look more presentable, raises property value and helps to reduce the risks of snakes and other unwanted animals from making a home too close to yours. You can take a lot of pride in keeping your lawn green and beautiful and with the tips listed below it’s not as hard as you might think.
Tips for a healthy lawn:
- Monitor the amount of water your lawn receives. If it rains for long periods of time, you need a drainage system so the water will run off and not puddle up in the yard. If it’s a dry spell, you need water your lawn to keep it from drying out.
- Use grass seed to fill in those bare spots. If the grass looks too thin everywhere, you can spread it all over the lawn but don’t use too much. Spread it thin and if you need more later on, you can repeat the process.
- For large bare spots, you need to put down the grass seed and then cover this lightly with straw. This will prevent the sun from scorching the seeds and prevent birds from eating them.
- Nothing can destroy a lawn quicker than weeds so, get rid of them before they have a chance to do damage. Spread weed killers across the lawn as early in the season as possible.
- Aeration is a method that pulls out small pieces of grass so air can reach the roots and improve the condition of your lawn. It’s the best way to fertilize your lawn but it can be expensive.
- Keep debris off of your lawn and mow the grass regularly. If anything sits on the grass for a long period of time, it will deprive it of the nutrients needed to stay healthy and the grass will begin to die.
- Don’t cut your grass too short or the sun will scorch it and cause it to turn a brown color.
- Don’t neglect your lawn when autumn rolls around and the leaves begin to fall. Raking the leaves up will keep your grass healthy so it will have a great start when spring returns.
If you’re having a difficult time keeping your lawn looking great, you need to check the soil. The area in which you live has a huge factor in how well the grass, shrubs, flowers and so forth grows. You may need to treat your lawn with fertilizer in order for it to have the nutrients needed for the grass and plants to be healthy. Using lime can raise the pH balance. This will reduce the acidic levels and increase the amount of alkaline making the soil more suitable for grass to grow. With commitment and a little hard work, anyone can have a green and beautiful lawn.
