How to Prepare Your Lawn Mower for Winter
With winter approaching fast it won’t be long before you’ll be making that last mow of the year. Once that is done, it will be time to get the lawn mower ready to be stored away until next spring. If you follow a few simple steps, you can ensure that your lawn mower will still be running like new when it’s time to make that first mow of the year.
How to prepare your lawn mower for winter:
- Run all of the gas out of your mower.
- Disconnect the wire that’s connected to the spark plug.
- Use a water hose to wash all of the grass and debris out from under the deck of the mower and wipe it down with a cloth.
- Wipe down the top of the deck and the engine cover with a damp cloth.
- File and sharpen the mower blades.
- Spray any moving parts down with lubricant to prevent rust.
- Replace the grease on the steering, front axle and the pulleys located on the mowing deck. However, don’t over-grease the pulleys or it can get onto the belts and this could cause them to slip.
- Store in your backyard shed or someplace where it will be out of the weather.
By taking these steps to prepare your lawn mower for winter, you’ll ensure that it’s in good shape and ready when spring arrives. As you can see, it only takes a little time and effort to take care of your lawn mower but these simple steps can save you lots of money.
A lawn mower can be a big investment, especially if you have a riding lawn mower. Taking care of it properly will help to extend its life so you can get the most for your money. When it’s time to start cutting the grass again next year, you’ll be ready.
