One sensible way to extend the use of your back yard and glamorize it at the same time is to add landscape lighting. But there are other benefits to it as well.  Lighting will prevent people from tripping in your yard at night.  It will discourage uninvited people and animals from trespassing. It will also dramatize and highlight certain aspects of your home and yard. And best of all, it is wonderful for outdoor entertaining in the evening !

There are many kinds of lights to choose from, so here is a list of some of them, and what they are used for:

• Shielded, or low impact lights – These face downward to provide visibility and safety when walking on a path or driveway.
• Uplighting – This is used at the base of statues, trees, flags, or large flowering shrubs, to highlight them.
• High mounted fixtures – Use these, mounted on tall trees, trellises, eaves, or gazebos, to highlight active areas such as pools, hot tubs, and decks. Typical fixtures are well lights, spot/accent lights, and wall wash lights. These are also good for security purposes.
• Spread lights - These produce low-level, circular patterns of light for illuminating ground cover, flowerbeds, shrubs, or even placed under the water in ornamental ponds.

There are things you must be careful of when planning your backyard lighting. For example, do not overload your circuits.  Use no more than 240 watts per cluster.  That would mean no more than six to a cluster of low wattage fixtures. Group your light fixtures into clusters of 2 to 6 with no more than 240 Watts per cluster.

Highlight gently, concealing fixtures whenever possible.  Be careful not to aim any of your lights toward the windows of a neighboring house. And use timers to turn them on and off. It is better to highlight a large tree or feature of your house using three low wattage fixtures set at different angles.
