Outdoor exercise is very important for children.  So now is the time to think about designing a safe, healthy, and fun playground for the kids.  They will be able to exercise their muscles, breathe fresh air, and bond with the neighborhood children…in their own back yard!

There are many things to consider when choosing play equipment for your family:

  • It should be appropriate for children the ages of your kids. If you have both toddlers and adolescents, the play area should be divided for safety.
  • Would and aluminum are not good for play equipment. It should be made of plastic. There should be no sharp edges, raised nail or screw heads, or rough corners.
  • Grass, sand, gravel, and wood chips are not as safe as rubber matting under your equipment.
  • Swing seats should be of plastic or rubber. If chains are used, they should be covered in plastic. Nylon cording is safer.
  • Slides should be deep, with raised sides, and all above ground climbing equipment should have guard rails.
  • Don’t place swing sets next to your garden, a wall, near a patio, or a driveway.
  • Your yard should be fenced in, so that you know at all times who is playing on your equipment.

Spacing is very important.  A child should not have to walk in front of a swinging swing to get to the climbing section.  Nothing should be in front of the bottom of the slide. And make sure that the installation is level…it will add to the life of the equipment.

Have an area  of six feet all the way around your play area that is free of all obstacles, such as trees, bushes, or sidewalks.  You don’t want your child to be hurt if he falls off of the equipment. And check it regularly for loose nuts and bolts, cracking, and rough edges.
