Summer Backyard Activities for the Kids
You can enjoy some good, old-fashioned fun in the sun with the kids right in your own backyard this summer. With most public schools ending or nearly ending their school years, it’s time to start planning summer fun activities for your students.
While we all love to take family vacations and most kids love summer camps, these activities won’t take up the whole summer. Plus, many parents are on a tight budget with the economy the way that it is now so summer backyard activities give you great fun without ever leaving your house.
Here are some ideas:
- Water balloon fights
- Slip-n-slide or small water pool
- Backyard Olympics
- Backyard gardening (container gardening if you can’t plan permanently)
- Build your own sandbox
These are just a few ideas you can try for summer backyard activities for the kids. You can think of more to last the whole summer. If you really want the kids to have fun, allow them to help you come up with ideas for fun activities. You’ll be surprised at what your kids can come up with when you give them the opportunity.
Celebrate Memorial Day in the Backyard
Memorial Day is a time for remembrance and celebration. It’s also a popular time for backyard BBQs and get-togethers with friends and family. You can celebrate this Memorial Day in the backyard with your closest friends and family. Here are some ideas on how to do it right.
- Invite some of your friends and family for a pot-luck BBQ. Times are tight for a lot of people financially so you can take the pressure off by inviting each person to bring a dish to share with the rest. This is also a great way to learn new recipes or find out what your friends really like to eat.
- Host a traditional BBQ in your own backyard and invite friends and family. Play some patriotic music in the backyard, share stories and let the kids run and play the day away.
- Have a water sports event with the kids in the backyard. Set up obstacles, games and more that they can enjoy in the sun on this holiday. Consider giving prizes out for winners as well. (Be sure everyone gets a prize).
These are just a few ideas for how you can celebrate Memorial Day right in your own backyard. What ideas do you have?
Tips for Having Backyard Family Fun this Winter
Winter is just around the corner but that doesn’t mean the outside activity needs to end. There are still a lot of fun things that you can do outside with your family even though it’s not the same things you’ve enjoyed throughout the summer. The main difference between enjoying the outside in the winter and other times of the year is that you’ll need to dress appropriately and keep an eye on the temperature.
Just because the outside air is colder, it doesn’t mean that you have to spend all of your free time in the house. Just keep up with the temperature and when it drops too low, you don’t want to spend a long time outside. You’ll need to take breaks often to go inside and warm up to prevent overexposure to the cold.
Here are a few things that you and your family can enjoy doing together outside this winter:
- Fly kites when the weather is appropriate and the wind is strong.
- Build snowmen and make snow angles.
- Go sledding.
- Gather together friends and family and go ice skating together.
- Decorate the yard for each holiday.
- Play basketball.
These are just a few suggestions but if you use your imagination you can make up many fun games to play with your kids to help make this winter more fun and interesting. Getting outside in the fresh air can be good for you and this way, you’ll still be getting some much needed exercise instead of sitting inside watching television or playing video games all season.
It’s important to keep the temperature in the home reasonable and not too hot. If it’s thirty degrees outside and ninety inside this huge change in temperature will be hard on your system and harder to adjust to. As long as you dress warm, keep a check on the temperature you can have a great winter filled with fun and excitement.
