Soil Testing Tips

One of the key factors in having a healthy lawn and garden is having your soil tested. If the soil is not healthy, nothing is going to grow as well as it could. You can’t just look at the soil and know its nutrient content. However, soil testing provides you with the information you need to keep your soil healthy by telling you what nutrients are missing. When you have this information, you know what type of fertilizer is needed to improve the quality of your soil.
When you have your soil tested it will be checked for pH levels, phosphate, magnesium, organic matter, nitrate-nitrogen, calcium, potassium and sodium. Testing your soil also helps keep your lawn and garden free of containments because if anything is polluting your soil, the test will pick it up and measures can be taken to eliminate the problem.
To help you get started here are a few soil testing tips:
- The best time to test your soil is in the fall or winter.
- Before taking your samples, make sure all the tools you use are few of containments to avoid false readings.
- Take several sub-samples throughout your lawn from different locations within the area that needs to be sampled.
- Keep your lawn sample separated from your garden sample.
- Samples should be taken from soil that is about four to six inches deep and it should be about a half inch thick.
- Seal up your samples before sending them in to be tested.
Knowing what nutrients are missing from your soil makes it easier to fit the problem. It saves you both time and money because you can buy the products you need right from the start. Otherwise, you’ll need to use different products and experiment to try and find the one that gets the results you’re searching for.
