How to Build a Treehouse without the Tree

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have beautiful trees in their backyard that’s perfect for building a treehouse but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have one. Instead of using a tree, you can build your house on posts.

Begin by deciding what size treehouse you want to build and determine what materials you’ll need. How much material you need to use will depend on what type of treehouse you plan to build and how elaborate you want it to be. Use pressure treated lumber to make your treehouse more durable.

For a child’s treehouse that will average about eight feet above ground, 4x4 post will work fine for the support beams. Place them six feet apart or less for ample support. This way, you won’t have to worry about putting too much strain on the posts when the house is built or high wind damage. Place the posts at least two feet deep. Pack the dirt back tight around them or fill the hole with pea gravel and dirt.

You can use 2x6 inch boards to connect the beans and frame out the treehouse but use 2-foot center floor joists to help strengthen the floor. You don’t want your child falling through. You can use plywood to close in the sides and to cover the floor beams. Add stairs or a ladder and your treehouse is ready for decorating and hours of fun.
