How to Build a Backyard Sandbox

Step2 Naturally Playful Sandbox

A backyard sandbox is a great place for kids to play. Using their buckets, shovels and imaginations, they can have all sorts of fun for hours at a time. It’s a safe and fun way for kids to spend their time and it doesn’t take long to build one.

Choose a spot where the sandbox will get morning or afternoon sun but where it will be shaded during the hottest part of the day. This is important because you don’t want your kids to be sunburned from spending too much time in the direct sun when playing.

Decide how large you want the sand box to be. A 4 X 6 foot is large enough for two or three small children to play comfortably. Clear out the area for the sandbox by getting rid of any debris, weeds, etc. Use four 2 X 6 inch boards for the frame, cut to specifications.

Nail the boards together to create a 4 X 6 foot rectangle, six inches high. Use plastic to cover the bottom and the sides of the frame to keep weeds and grass from growing in your sandbox. Nail or staple the plastic down to the outside of the boards. Fill with sand and it’s ready for playtime.
