With the cold weather moving in, it’s important to make sure your lawn is ready for the winter. One way to do that is by aerating and fertilizing your lawn. Aerating will help prevent lawn thatch that can damage your grass. Thatch gathers below the grass line where it’s hard to see. It consists of roots, clippings and grass stems. It hinders new growth and keeps your lawn from filling out.
After aerating your lawn, put down fertilizer. The grass will be inactive during the winter so it won’t grow very much but it will absorb the nutrients into the roots. This will help to prepare the grass for spring and as soon as the weather breaks, new growth will begin popping up everywhere.
If you have to walk through the yard in the winter, use different paths. Following the same path repeatedly will wear down and compact the grass in that area and it will have a hard time recovering when spring arrives. Avoid parking your vehicle on your lawn if possible because this will also damage the grass.
Following these simple tips will help protect your lawn so your backyard will have a good start when the weather breaks. They’ll help you have a full, thick, healthy lawn you can be proud to show off.
